Under the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 (PPA), TRI collects information to track industry progress in reducing waste generation and moving towards safer waste management alternatives. Measures that facilities have taken to prevent pollution and reduce the amount of toxic chemicals entering the environment are shown in the table below. Although factors other than these reported practices contribute to year-to-year changes in releases, results are sorted by largest reduction in order to facilitate identification of pollution prevention successes. Zinc compounds 332812: Metal Coating, Engraving (except Jewelry and Silverware), and Allied Services to Manufacturers 2018 3,013.00 1,654.00 -45.1 Source Reduction: W58: Other process modifications - Installed a "dirt box" in the galvanizing kettle to allow the crew to "work" the skimmings to leave more of the zinc in the galvanizing kettle and produce less of the zinc containing byproduct that is tracked in this form R. This resulted in a 20% reduction in skimmings produced per pound galvanized; for 2018 this translates into 43,000 pounds less skimmings produced. This modification was not implemented until July 2018.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03 : MATERIALS BALANCE AUDITS - An employee analyzed numbers from times past when a dirt box was used and calculated that up to 40% reduction in skimmings production was possible. This is valuable because less skims produced results in less zinc purchased.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - A new lighting audit identified electricity savings from converting metal halide lamps to LED lamps. Even though the new equipment was not installed until August of 2018, Electricity usage was down more than 17% for the 2018 compared to 2017.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11 : OTHER - Observation of process and analysis of the skimming product.
