POTW Transfers Releases to Class I UI Wells and Landfills

Quantities of TRI chemicals that are transferred to publicly-owned treatment works (POTWs) that are disposed of or released to Class I Underground Injection Wells, RCRA C Landfills and/or Other (Non RCRA C) Landfills during the calendar year (January 1 - December 31). TRI Chemicals transferred to POTWs can be totally, partially or not destroyed at all by sewage treatment processes. Metals and metal compounds are not destroyed by treatment processes. However, other TRI chemicals can be destroyed to varying degrees. Chemicals, only partially destroyed or not at all, pass through the POTW treatment process and are disposed of or released to the environment in different ways. This data element shows the quantity of a TRI chemical that has passed through a POTW treatment process, has not been fully destroyed and will be disposed of or released to Class I Underground Injection Wells, RCRA C Landfills and/or Other (Non RCRA C) Landfills. POTW refers to a municipal sewage treatment plant. The most common transfers of TRI chemicals to POTWs are conveyances of the toxic chemical in facility wastewater through underground sewage pipes. However, TRI chemicals can also be trucked to a POTW or transferred via other direct methods. This data comes from Section 6.1 on the TRI Form R.
