B3 | B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. | The amount of cyanide used in KPW's baths has been optimized to produce the best quality metal deposit using the lowest amount of free cyanide. Any further reductions in bath cyanide levels will lead to reduced quality levels and increased rejections due to poor plated deposit appearance. |
B6 | B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas | Cyanide is used in KPW's silver and copper plating baths to solubilize the metal ion and help corrode the anodes. The level of cyanide has been adjusted to be optimal for our processes and requirements. The company monitors and maintains cyanide levels to ensure process performance and the amount of cyanide used will vary based on production levels. These factors limit any substantial amount of source reduction. |
B7 | B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. | A cyanide based electrolyte is the only known method for producing the type of deposit required by KPW's silver plating customers. Non-cyanide technologies exist, but they do not have the same purity and appearance that cyanide based deposits offer. |

PRAI | Production or Activity Variable | The variable used is the amount of silver anodes purchased in 2018 vs. 2017. Silver plating is a major source of cyanide compounds at Klein Plating and the volume of silver anodes used and consumed in the process corresponds to how much cyanide will be purchased and consumed. |

COMMENT TYPE | DESCRIPTION | COMMENT TEXT |

B7 | B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. | The primary source of lead in Klein Plating's operations comes from the process of electroplating tin-lead alloys onto customers' parts per their requirements. The lead becomes part of the surface coating which enhances the part's physical characteristics. There is no substitute for these alloys when they are specified by the customer. While the majority of lead becomes an integral part of the component, a small amount enters KPW's waste stream through rinses as well as spent bath filters. Therefore, lead will always be a hazardous waste generated by KPW and its amount will vary based on the level of tin-lead production. |
SRNA | B99 - Other | A small source of lead comes from the cleaning and pre-treatment of leaded alloys such as leaded brass or leaded steel. KPW has no control on the amount of lead contained in its customers' parts and the amount of lead containing material processed by KPW will impact the amount of lead waste generated. |
9.1 Miscellaneous, Additional or Optional Information regarding the Form R submission
COMMENT TYPE | DESCRIPTION | COMMENT TEXT |
---|---|---|
PROD | Changes in Production Levels | KPW has seen an increase in tin-lead sales which led to an increase of waste generated. This increase continues into 2019. |
PRAI | Production or Activity Variable | The total sales of tin-lead (solder) plating in 2018 vs. 2017. Tin-lead plating is the primary driver of lead usage and the volume of sales would be an indicator in the amount used and needed in KPW's processes. |

TRT | Waste Treatment | All nitric acid used at Klein Plating is eventually treated in its wastewater treatment system before discharge to the local POTW. The neutralization and treatment of this material effectively destroys it, but in doing so creates nitrate compounds which triggers the reporting of that hazardous substance. |
B3 | B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. | KPW has implemented past programs that sought to extend the life of nitric acid pickle baths by means of frequent monitoring and additions. Extending the life would reduce the total volume used in a year. However, the more contaminated the nitric acid gets, the greater the decline in its cleaning and descaling abilities so quality begins to suffer at a certain saturation point. |
B6 | B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas | KPW has already implemented process controls to extend and reduce the amount of nitric acid used in its processes. These efforts were successful in the past, but nitric acid remains a vital chemistry in the pretreatment of certain materials. The amount of nitric acid used also depends on the amount and condition of material processed. These variables will cause the amount of nitric acid waste to fluctuate yearly. |
B7 | B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. | Research and experimentation has been done to find alternatives to nitric acid. However, other options proved to be less robust, difficult to control, cost prohibitive, and used other hazardous materials making them unacceptable as a production replacement. |
9.1 Miscellaneous, Additional or Optional Information regarding the Form R submission
COMMENT TYPE | DESCRIPTION | COMMENT TEXT |
---|---|---|
PROD | Changes in Production Levels | There was a 10% increase in the total weight of copper processed in 2018 vs. 2017. This contributed to an increase in nitric acid usage. |
CALC | Calculation Methods, e.g., Emission Factors | KPW used a more conservative activity rate when calculating air emissions. The activity rate used was every hour of every day in a year compared to actual usage since estimating actual usage proved difficult to capture. This is the reason why air emissions increased. However, this is a very conservative estimate and actual emissions are likely to be less. |
PRAI | Production or Activity Variable | The variable used for the production ratio is the total weight of copper alloys processed in 2017 vs. 2018. Nitric acid is primarily used in the cleaning, deoxidizing, and descaling of copper material prior to the plating process making it a feasible variable in the amount of nitric acid used. |

TRT | Waste Treatment | The waste treatment of spent nitric acid creates the nitrate compounds manufactured by Klein Plating. Nitric acid is vital to many of KPW's processes and therefore it will continue to generate nitrates. Volume will fluctuate based on production levels. |
B8 | B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible | This hazardous material is the natural byproduct of the neutralization of spent nitric acid in Klein Plating's waste treatment system. There is no way to avoid this reaction and the only way to reduce it is to reduce the usage of nitric acid. |
9.1 Miscellaneous, Additional or Optional Information regarding the Form R submission
COMMENT TYPE | DESCRIPTION | COMMENT TEXT |
---|---|---|
PROD | Changes in Production Levels | Klein Plating treated 15,539.44 lbs. of nitric acid in 2018 vs.. 13,310.78 lbs. in 2017. This increase in usage created the increase in nitrate compounds generated. |
PRAI | Production or Activity Variable | The activity variable is calculated with the amount of nitric acid used in 2018 vs. 2017. The waste treatment of spent nitric acid is what generates this hazardous material and is the main driving factor. |

B6 | B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas | This waste stream is mainly generated by the pre-treatment and plating of copper substrate components. This activity is a core business practice of KPW and reducing the amount of copper parts plated would mean a reduction in business. The amount of copper parts sent in for plating and the condition of those parts will impact the amount of copper that enters its waste stream. The actual amount of copper waste that is generated will always be variable and fluctuate based on the volume of work. Alternative processes have already been investigated and, where applicable, implemented to reduce this waste stream. Further research has revealed that there are no new known technologies that would adequately replace current processes and reduce the level of copper waste. Any significant reduction would have to come from plating less copper based material and would have a negative impact on the financial well being of the company. |
B7 | B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. | See answer to Section 8.10 B6 |

COMMENT TYPE | DESCRIPTION | COMMENT TEXT |
---|---|---|
PROD | Changes in Production Levels | KPW saw a 10% increase in the total amount of copper plated in 2018 vs. 2017. This increase led to increases in the amount of copper waste generated and discharged in 2018. |
ISSU | Issues or Difficulties Encountered in Submitting Form | It is difficult and nearly impossible to accurately predict future waste amounts. KPW is a job shop and has very little control over the amount of copper parts it receives to be plated. There are little to no future forecasts and no contracts that accurately foretell the amount of material that will be processed in the future. PRAI | Production or Activity Variable | The production ratio is calculated using the amount of copper alloys plated in 2018 compared to 2017. Plating copper components is the primary driver of this waste. In 2018, KPW plated approximately 2,147,145 lbs. of copper alloy parts vs. 1,945,430 lbs. in 2017.
